Crossing the Suez

17/10/73

On the night of the 16th October 1973 Israeli forces crossed the Suez canal and set foot in Africa. They had squeezed through the gap between the Egyptian 2nd and 3rd Armies and managed a tenuous foothold on the opposite bank. However the Egyptians were aware of the danger and on the 17th they launched a ferocious counter attack whilst the Israelis struggled to reinforce their bridgehead.

The brown areas are sand dunes.

The bright green area is cultivated land. It has no game effect except it prevents long range fire.

The dull olive green area is a mixture of cultivated land, palm trees, reeds and small dwellings.

The blue areas are water and impassable.

The red lines are roads. They have no game effect except to obviate the movement penalties of the surrounding terrain. The labels for the roads are the Israeli codenames.

The thick blue line is the Suez Canal, it is impassable.

Aircraft

All IAF support was focussed across the canal. The only aircraft active on the east bank were the EAF. Each turn roll 1d6. On a 5 one MiG-17F ground attack arrives, on a 6 two MiG-17F arrive

Special Rules

The game is 8 turns long. However if in the opinion of BOTH sides the game is on a knife edge a further turn may be played to determine the outcome.

The area west of the canal is not in-play for this scenario. Units crossing to the west may not return to the east during the scenario.

Much of the Egyptian artillery (which is not shown in the scenario) is bombarding the Israeli bridges and surrounding area. Any Israeli unit within 3" of a bridge or ferry crossing point is disrupted and may not become undisrupted until it moves further away.

Victory Conditions

To win the Israelis must satisfy three conditions:

Otherwise its an Egyptian victory
